Stephen Lally appointed new Galway WFC manager

Lally will take his first training session with the club on Tuesday evening

Stephen Lally has been appointed as Galway WFC's new manager.

The former Galway United player and boss succeeds Billy Clery, who stepped down from the role this week.

Lally was an interested spectator at Eamonn Deacy Park on Saturday when an understrength Galway lost a WNL thriller 3-4 against a determined Athlone Town outfit.

In recent years Lally has carried out important work helping to develop Mervue United's underage talent

Now Lally is eager to make an impact with Galway WFC. "In fairness to Billy Clery, the previous manager, he has done an awful lot of work behind the scenes getting the structure of the club up and running," Lally says.

"You have a lot of talented girls here, I'm just after meeting them, they were devestated after the result. They've had a tough week losing their manager, it is not nice, I've been there myself as a player. So I understand what it is like.

"I know there is much more in them, I will have a good chat with them on Tuesday and we will move on from then."

An interview with Stephen Lally will be broadcast on the next 'Cian On Sport' podcast.
