Work to start on new Primary Care Centre for Oranmore within coming months

'Oranmore is one of the fastest growing towns in Ireland and is really lacking in health infrastructure,' says Minister Hildegarde Naughton

A new Primary Care Centre in Oranmore is to be built after An Bord Pleanála upheld the decision of Galway County Council to grant permission for the development.

The Primary Care Centre will consist of a part two-storey, part three-storey, part four-storey building with a total floor space of 5,109.4 sqm with associated medical consulting & treatment rooms at the east side of Oranmore.

Fine Gael TD for Galway West, and Oranmore native, Minister Hildegarde Naughton, said that the project would provide very much need health infrastructure in Oranmore.

.

“I am pleased that this project will now go ahead. Oranmore is one of the fastest growing towns in Ireland and is really lacking in health infrastructure. This new development will go a long way to meeting that need,” said Minister Naughton.

The new centre will be a one-stop-shop for services including public health, schools, and community nursing, physiotherapy, occupational and speech therapy, x-ray services, counselling, and more. It will serve Oranmore, Maree, Craughwell, Clarinbridge and Ardrahan.

“People in Oranmore and surrounding areas will be all too familiar with the experience of having to travel into Galway City for a scheduled x-ray or physiotherapy session. This new facility will mean an end to that practice for many. Additionally, I am very pleased to see that there will be an ambulance deployment point on site, which will be accessible at all times,” the Minister added.

.

“At present, there is no health centre for the local Primary Care Team. This team provides care to a population well in excess of 14,000 in Oranmore and surrounding areas. They will now be accommodated in this centre, along with staff of the Child and Family Agency, TUSLA. In that light, I am pleased I have received confirmation that building works will start within the next few months,” the Minister confirmed.

“I am acutely aware of the need to move suitable healthcare services into the community and away from the acute hospital setting. The confirmation I received today will mean that healthcare will be right in the heart of the local community and is, therefore, very much to be welcomed.
