Allowing pregnant women be accompanied for scans is ‘compassionate decision’, says Farrell

Decision by UHG will be a ‘relief’ to pregnant women across Galway, says Sinn Féin TD

Allowing pregnant women to be accompanied by a partner at anomaly scans is a “compassionate decision” that will be a “relief” to women across Galway.

This is the view of Sinn Féin Galway West TD, Mairéad Farrell, who has welcomed the decision, taken recently by University Hospital Galway. She said it avoided a situation where easing of Covid-19 restrictions would have seen “golfers return to the greens” this week, while expectant mothers were still expected to attend maternity appointments alone.

“Several pregnant women have contacted me over the past number of months,” said Dep Farrell, “telling me how distressing and isolating this experience has been and how much they missed the support of their partners at such appointments.”
