Play seriously and seriously play — dynamic theatre course offers more than just performance skills

Galway Community College's QQI Level 5 acting and theatre performance course has been established for more than 15 years now. It offers school leavers and adults looking to return to education a solid foundation in the performing arts and more.

This dynamic QQI Level 5 course is designed to provide professional training to enable the student with strong acting techniques and performance skills to pursue a career in theatre, television and film, and beyond.

Students are equipped with the knowledge, insight, and techniques they need to meet the demands of the acting profession. Participants also gain knowledge in other various theatre roles, from stage managers to directors, theatre makers to administrators; this enables them to contribute intellectually and creatively and at the highest levels of the profession.

Modules include acting for TV and film, acting skills and techniques, performance craft, stage management and administration, theatre studies, work experience, professional personal development, and communications.

This course is unique in Galway as it has direct links, on campus, with film studies and music and performance courses with graduates often opting to progress onto the Level 6 in film and TV.

The acting and theatre performance course has numerous features: specialised acting and vocal workshops, guaranteed acting roles in films and links with casting agencies, theatre visits, as well as public theatre performance opportunities in established professional Galway theatre venues such as the Town Hall, An Taibhdhearc, and Nuns' Island Theatre.

This course also nurtures and prepares the student to progress onto drama, theatre, and performance courses in NUIG, UCC, UL, UCD, and The Lir. The students, both those fresh from the Leaving Cert as well as mature students, have the opportunity to achieve up to 390 points in a PLC course thereby gaining access to third level.

The work experience aspect also provides an invaluable experience to students as Galway boasts theatre companies and festivals that feature among the best in the world: Druid, Branar, Decadent, Macnas, Moonfish, Galway International Arts Festival, Galway Film Fleadh, Babóró International Arts Festival for Children, and many more.

This course makes studying drama extremely accessible, with its low cost of €175 in student services fee which applies to all learners. There is a Government levy fee from which those holding a medical card or those in receipt of a SUSI grant or Back to Education Allowance are exempt.

A course like this builds skills transferable to all professions as well as strong personal growth and confidence in team and group settings. Previous students have maintained strong links both with the course as well as with each other as they have furthered their careers. The acting and theatre performance course is an accessible gift of a course in the thriving arts centre that is Galway city. Apply now at www.galwaycc.ie
