Call for council to trial two-way cycle path along Prom

Galway Urban Greenway Alliance wants the Galway City Council to trial a two way cycle path along the coastal side of the Salthill promenade.

GUGA believes that this could ultimately help deliver a coastal greenway from Galway to Barna, via Salthill.

Chairperson of GUGA, Michelle Smyth said that “we can make life better for many people by taking them out of cars and giving them fresh air and exercise and enabling them to enjoy the prom fully without the wonderful view being blocked by a long line-up of cars.

“Recent changes to the promenade which introduced railings to limit parking and gatherings means that we now have the ideal circumstances to trial this, while habits have changed.

“A trial now would also enable us to iron out any issues through consultation and clever design.”

Galway Urban Greenway Alliance recently met with representatives of the Village Salthill, a local business owners group about the proposal.

GUGA remains adamant that a Salthill cycleway would create a safe commuting option for essential workers right and could connect the city with Salthill, Knocknacarra, and surrounding areas.
