Athenry farm sold at auction

A 48 acre farm in Athenry sold for €580,000 at a public auction last week.

The auction was conducted to a packed auction room by Frank Sweeney MIPAV of Frank Sweeney auctioneers in Athenry.

The farm at Kilskeagh, Athenry, had been guided at €600,000 and the farm had no entitlements.

The lands was sold in two lots — 24 acres of arable farm lands suitable for all types of farming; and 24 acres of hazel and scrub, with little or none arable. This land is in need of reclamation. The residence was a single storey one bedroom farm house in need of repairs.

The arable lands sold at €18,000 per acre, while the hazel and scrub fetched €7,000 per acre.

Mr Sweeney said this was an excellent price for land in Co Galway given current economic circumstances, and it was encouraging to see so many bidders and interest in farmland.
