New fire station for Athenry announced as 'a priority' by Minister

Site is close to being acquired at the edge of town by the Galway County Council

Construction of a new fire station in Athenry is now a priority project for the Galway County Council, as acquisition of a site is almost complete and a design team is to be appointed to take the project through the planning process and construction.

Confirmation of the new fire station for the east Galway Town came from the Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, Darragh O’Brien. The site for the proposed new station lies at the edge of the town.

New station 'urgently needed'

The news has been welcomed by the Fine Gael Galway East TD, Ciaran Cannon, who said the new staton was "urgently needed". He pointed out that the current station is "substandard both in terms of its size and facilities". He also said that access to the current station is "very difficult", while the building is "too small to accommodate a modern state of the art fire service".

Dep Cannon said it was "imperative this project is brought to fruition as quickly as possible" because of the "substandard facilities at the current station".
