Galway schools to get €1.4 million in funding for upgrades

Eighteen Galway schools get money for repairs and improvements to toilets and roofs

Close to €1.4 million has been allocated to 18 primary and secondary schools in Galway under the Department of Education’s Summer Works Scheme.

The funding, which will allow the schools to carry out structural works and minor upgrades in 2021, is part of a €31.4 million investment in upgrades at 275 schools across the State, and follows a €160 million allocation for minor works for Covid-19 measures.

The works will mostly be focussed on sanitary facilities and roof repairs. Toilet facilities will be upgraded at The Bish and St Patrick’s National School in Galway city. Scoil Mhuire in Oranmore, and St Nicholas’ National School in the Claddagh have been allocated funding for roof works.

The funding has been welcomed by the Minister of State at the Department of Transport, and Fine Gael Galway West TD, Hildegarde Naughton [pictured above].

"The investment will benefit students and staff of schools, and support jobs," she said. “Schemes such as this provide an important boost to contractors, tradespeople and the construction industry at a time of great uncertainty. They’re not just allocations for schools, but also investments in local economies."

Minister Naughton said that the beneficiaries of the scheme were being notified now so that schools will have a good lead-in period during which to plan and deliver the relevant projects next summer.
