Fundraiser for stroke sufferer

A coffee/tea morning which will be held at the Bold Art Gallery on Saturday from 10am to 12pm will raise funds for a radical new treatment for a stroke survivor.

The event is in aid of Sheila Kain, a sister of Johanna Downes who lives in Crestwood and is well known locally through her nursing work at University Hospital Galway and as president of the Business and Professional Women’s Group and chairperson of Fr Griffin Eire Og Football Club.

Ms Kain suffered a massive stroke in 2004 after which she lost the ability to speak and communicate as well as all movement on the right side of her body.

“As her family and friends rallied to her support afterwards little hope was held of a major recovery until very recently with the advent of the radical new treatment in Germany,” explains a family spokesperson. “Unlike stemcell treatments that have caused controversy among pro-life groups in recent years the German procedure will see Ms Kain treated with her own stemcells.”
