Miller's Lane can be more than just soccer pitches, says Connolly

Councillor calls on City Hall to exploit potential recreational uses of Miller's Lane

Millers Lane should not just be soccer pitches, but has the potential to be a recreation space for the entire local community, according to Cllr John Connolly.

The Fianna Fáil Galway City West councillor was responding to the recent works, carried out by the Galway City Council, on Millers Lane. The works include enhanced path surface, clearing of overgrowth, additional planting of trees. However he feels the works should not stop there.

"These works have highlighted the potential of the area, which has suffered from a lack of formal management and maintenance for too long," he said. "The enhancement opens other opportunities for the local authority to examine as to how the space can enhance the recreational and environmental pursuits of the community.”

Cllr Connolly said that, "for too long", recreational use of this area was "limited to teams using the soccer pitches". While he said it is important that such use continues, he said the area between the lane and the pitches "has much more potential" and that this should be exploited.

Safe journey to school

Cllr Connolly added that the recent works involved the enhancement of the path running along the pitches to a next exit at the pedestrian crossing, adjacent to Gaelscoil Mhic Amhlaigh. He said it can provide a safe route to school from pupils attending from Cruachán, Rockfield, Friars Hill, Gort Gréine, Friar's Hill, Ros Geal, Fort Lorenzo, Garraí Dé Brún, The Orchard, Manor Close, and Manor Avenue.

"Residents from those estates," he said, "can also enjoy access to the shopping area at the Gateway Retail Centre through the enhanced route.”
