‘Turning Galway into an exhibition’

Mayor Mike Cubbard encourages people to 'get creative' and view the Creative Ireland exhibitions around the city

THE FIRST in a series of exhibitions under the Government’s art and culture ‘Getting Through Covid-19 Together’ campaign opens in the Eyre Square Shopping Centre from today, Thursday October 15.

Photographs, art, poetry and stories will be displayed and showcased around Galway city as part of the campaign, with the first being a photo exhibition by Dr Chaosheng Zhang.

Since 2017, Dr Zhang has been taking photos of the city and around the NUI Galway campus. His photos have been used in various publications at the university and by business groups, and are also widely shared on social media.

The exhibition will run throughout the remainder of October, with a new exhibition in November showcasing the imagination and creativity of young people in the city, while December will have an Christmas-themed exhibition. Dr Zhang was also the winner of the recent Galway Advertiser photography competition 'The Best Things in Life Are Free'.

"I would encourage everyone to attend or take part in Creative Ireland projects around the city. You never know what will spark your imagination and creativity" - Mayor Mike Cubbard

The Mayor of Galway, Independent city councillor Mike Cubbard, has welcomed the initiative, which emphasises the importance of human creativity for individual and national wellbeing.

“I would encourage everyone to check out what is happening and to take the opportunity to attend or take part in Creative Ireland projects around the city," he said. "You never know what will spark your imagination and creativity. We have all seen just how much creativity and the arts support health and well-being during the last few months."
