Galway city councillors are calling for the development of a calendar of commemorative occasions in 2020 to mark the centenary of significant events of the War of Independence that occurred in Galway during 1920.
The motion which was proposed by Fianna Fáil councillor John Connolly at the local authority's special meeting at Leisureland on Monday evening would see events such as the murders of Sean Mulvoy at Galway Railway Station and Seamus Quirke in September 1920 commemorated.
Cllr Connolly said; "Galway changed significantly in the 1920s. This motion has sought to reflect and [remember] those who lost their lives."
In a letter to Cllr Connolly's request in July, the acting director of services, Brian Barrett, said heritage officer of the Galway City Council, Dr Jim Higgins, had committed to working with relevant groups and families to produce a programme in relation to the commemorative occasions proposed in the motion using the Decade of Centenaries funding.
