NUI Galway will provide refunds to students not proceeding with accommodation

Students who decide not to proceed with their booking of university owned accommodation will be entitled to a full refund NUI Galway has confirmed.

Many students had paid for campus accommodation on the basis that they would receive at least 30 per cent of their classes on campus.

However, after the subsequent publishing of timetables, many students discovered that they would have no teaching time or very limited hours on campus in order to comply with social distancing.

A spokesperson for NUI Galway said; “In line with public health guidelines, our teaching this year will be delivered through a hybrid model of on-campus activity and online lectures. At NUI Galway we are doing our utmost to deliver a safe and meaningful academic and social on-campus experience to the benefit of our students.

“Any student who is registered to stay in university owned student accommodation will be entitled to a refund if they decide not to proceed with the booking due to having less time on campus than originally planned.”

NUI Galway Students' Union (SU ) which lobbied the university to refund students for their accommodation, welcomed the university's decision.

President of the SU, Pádraic Toomey, said the SU was delighted with the university's announcement in the light that many students are already under huge financial strain because of the pandemic.
