Council must rethink policy on collecting grass cuttings, says Cheevers

Councillor is concerned that such bags will be used for illegal bonfires

City Hall needs to rethink its policy of not collecting grass cuttings in council managed estates, especially with the rise of plastic bags filled with mown grass that have been accumulating in estates recently.

This is the view of Fianna Fáil Galway City East councillor Alan Cheevers, who is calling on the Galway City Council parks department to review the policy.

.

"I have seen a build up of bags full of cutting on roadsides and estates in recent weeks," he said, "but you can’t expect residents to incur the cost of this. The council needs to come up with a better solution, for example a composting programme."

Cllr Cheevers said he is also concerned that, coming into Halloween, these kinds of bags will be used for illegal bonfires.
