Galway Lifeboat called to yacht in difficulty on Galway Bay

A man whose yacht got into difficulty on Galway Bay on Monday has been rescued by Galway RNLI Lifeboat.

The yacht was sailing from Barna to Ballyvaughan when the forestay (stay ) broke and the mast crashed onto the deck.

The man who was alone on the yacht contacted the Coast Guard who sought the assistance of Galway Lifeboat at about 9.27am.

The Lifeboat launched from Galway Docks within minutes and located the yacht off Furbo. The lifeboat crew took the man on board and towed the yacht to Spiddel.

Galway Lifeboat Deputy Launch Authority Shane Folan says the rescue was not without difficulties. “There was a south west wind 4 to 5 and one and a half to two metres sea sell, but thankfully we got the vessel safely to Spiddel.”

The RNLI crew involved in this rescue were Helmsman Martin Oliver, Sean King, Lisa McDonagh and Greg Cullen.
