City Hall issues tenders for Martin Roundabout transformation

Plans for roundabout will prioritise buses and include full pedestrian and cycling facilities

Tenders are being sought for a major renovation of the Martin Roundabout, which will see it transformed into a signalised junction with a new layout to prioritise buses, as well as include full pedestrian and cycling facilities.

The Martin Roundabout, one of the busiest in the city, is adjacent to the Galway Clinic, and connects the Old Dublin Road with the N67 at Roscam/Doughiska. The Galway City Council is currently seeking contractors.

Among the renovations that will take place at the site are signalised junction design, signage, public lighting, flood risk measures. The project itself is supported through €2.7 million funding from the first round of the Urban Regeneration and Development Fund. The work is also seen as key to the development of new homes at Ardaun.

The issuing of tenders has been welcomed by Senator Seán Kyne, acting Aire don Ghaeilge, don Ghaeltacht agus do na hOileáin. “This is one of the key routes into the city and caters for commuters and different types of transport from Oranmore, Clarinbridge, and the south of the county," he said.

Sen Kyne added it was "very welcome" to see a focus being placed on making this junction more public transport and cycling friendly. “With the impact of Covid-19," he said, "the speedier development of different transport types to allow for social distancing is more important than ever."
