Council grants permission for re-development of Portumna hotel

A hotel that was destroyed by fire in 2011 and which has been “an eyesore” for almost a decade, has now received planning permission for a complete re-development and refurbishment.

The Galway County Council’s grant of permission for works to begin on the Shannon Oaks Hotel in Portumna has been welcomed by the Galway East TD and acting Minister for Rural Affairs, Seán Canney.

“I am hopeful the developers who own the site will waste no time in restoring the hotel to its former glory,” he said. “The restoration would complement the significant restoration works at Portumna Castle and the marina, to bring a major boost to tourism in the Portumna area. It would also provide new jobs and support future plans for tourism that would bring major benefits to the local economy.”
