Volkswagen concept sketches of new Caddy van

Volkswagen has released a preview of its new Caddy van, which will be unveiled next month (February ).

It is long overdue and will go on sale late this year, and Volkswagen promises it will be different to the current models.

While the sketches show a sportier look for the Caddy, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles promises it will also fulfil fleet requirements, such as high cargo capacity and great variability.

It promises to be a new van, based on a new platform, which is likely to be the same MQB structure that underpins lots of Volkswagen Group cars, including the VW Golf hatchback and Skoda Kodiaq SUV. This impressive platform should deliver excellent safety and drivability. Volkswagen says it aims to become the benchmark in its class.

Sketches of the new Caddy van illustrate a beefy but aggressive and sculptured design look. To the front there is a narrow grille and new LED headlamps, and slim LED lights at the rear, defining a larger back window. However, Volkswagen has confirmed metal panelled rear doors that open from the sides will also continue to be available. It also has larger wheels, and the sketches show a more sloping roofline than in this segment.

There are no giveaway hints on the engine line-up for the new Caddy, but expect petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrids to be offered. What is less clear is the likelihood of an electric version. This is complicated by Volkswagen having already confirmed that a separate electric van is included in its new ID sub-brand passenger car plans.

Expect to see short-wheelbase (SWB ) and long-wheelbase (LWB ) models, and one roof height, plus a choice of Caddy panel vans and Caddy Life people carrying versions. It was not mentioned, but with so much changing, we probably expect to see a slight rise in price over the current model.
