Kyne approves funding for Inishbofin development company

Funding totalling €103,530 to support a development company on Inishbofin was approved this week by Aire don Ghaeilge, don Ghaeltacht agus do na hOileáin, Seán Kyne.

The funding is part of investment by the Government of over half a million euro to support the development companies and cooperatives on five islands in counties Galway, Mayo, and Cork. The funding is to support the work of the development companies and covers administrative and operation costs such as salaries and office accommodation.

The investment of €103,530 includes €22,700 for Comhar na nOileán Teo, based on Inis Óir which undertakes administrative work on behalf of the Department of Culture, Heritage and Gaeltacht each year.

“Island development companies or cooperatives such as Inishbofin Development Company carry out work instrumental to the sustainability and developments of island communities,” said Minister Kyne.

“The companies are involved in key aspects of island life including the provision of services, employment and education as well as tourism, heritage and culture. The companies and co-operatives will also be instrumental to the development of the new whole-of-government Islands’ policy and action plan, for which public consultation is now open.”
