The Flaming Lips return to Galway this summer

Psychedelic rockers to play GIAF Big Top in July

THE FLAMING Lips, the three-time Grammy Award winning psychedelic indie-rock band, and one of Q magazine’s ‘50 Bands to See Before You Die’, have announced they are coming back to Galway this summer.

The Flaming Lips played one of the greatest and most unforgettable concerts ever to have taken place in the Big Top at the 2018 Galway International Arts Festival. The band return to GIAF 2020 to play the Big Top on Saturday July 18.

Formed in 1983 in Oklahoma, The Flaming Lips recorded several albums and EPs on an indie label, Restless, in the 1980s and early 1990s, eventually coming to the attention of Warner Brothers. In 1993, they released Transmissions from the Satellite Heart, which lead to the band featuring on Beverly Hills 90210, Late Show with David Letterman, Charmed, and Beavis and Butt-head.

Their real breakthrough came with the 1999 release, The Soft Bulletin, which was compared by many music critics to the Beach Boys' Pet Sounds because of its inclusion of harmonies and orchestrated sounds. Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, which followed in 2001 was a critical and commercial triumph, and was Uncut's album of the year.

In 2007, they were nominated for a BRIT Award for Best International Act and, overall, the group have won three Grammy awards, including two for Best Rock Instrumental Performance. They released a single a month in 2011, and this year, have released two albums, the new studio set, King's Mouth, and this month saw new live album, The Soft Bulletin: Live at Red Rocks.

This is a 'Galway International Arts Festival and Róisín Dubh presents...' event. Tickets go on sale on Friday November 29 at 9am, at €49.50 from www.giaf.ie and roisindubh.net
