Mixed fortunes for Super League basketball clubs

Maree grabbed a much-needed second victory in this season's basketball Super League when taking the scalp of Griffith College Templeogue.

The Galway club overcame Templeogue with ease, having led from the start.

Strong defence kept Templeogue to just 27 points in the first half at Calasanctius College, while big performances from Darin Johnson, Kenneth Hansberry and Paul Freeman ensured Maree controlled of the pace of the game to run out 12-point winners.

Coach Mike Lynch was "absolutely delighted" with the result.

"We were under no illusions as to who were favourites coming into the game, " he said, " but we did our homework well and the players put on a great defensive display.”

Mareee's women's Super League side suffered a defeat to Maxol WIT Wildcats, 80-92

Moycullen frustrated

Moycullen's Superleague side was hoping to cause an upset when they travelled to Kerry to take on Tralee Warriors, but it turned into a one-sided affair with the league champions winning 89-63.

Moycullen were not helped with a couple players unable to travel and limited minutes for players returning from injury as Tralee led the game from start to finish.

After a poor first half, Moycullen found themselves 17 points adrift entering the third quarter, prompting Moycullen coach John Cunningham to give valuable playing time and experience to some of his younger players.

James Lyons, James Conaire and Josh Marvelesly each played well during the third quarter, while Paddy Lyons, having recently from a long-term injury, looked to be almost back to his old self.

John Cunningham said the performance was frustrating.

"While Tralee are top of the league and playing really well, it was frustrating we didn’t give a better performance than today. We started very flat and were chasing the game from the beginning- it was never going to be easy for us to get back in it,” he said.

“I’m happy some of the lads who got minutes looked so solid- that’s something that can only help us going forward,

This coming Saturday Moycullen will be back at home for a match against C and S Neptune in The Jes at 7.30pm.
