'Students will be encouraged to reach their potential in a happy, safe, and inclusive environment'

Galway Educate Together secondary school opens in temporary accommodation at Merlin Park

Galway's new second level school, and the first Educate Together secondary school in the county, was last Friday officially opened in its temporary accommodation at Grianach House beside Galway Crystal, Merlin Park.

Educate Together was granted patronage of the school after a process to ascertain parental preference in 2018. The school’s permanent accommodation is being sought by the Department of Education and Skills. Galway ETSS will have capacity for 1,000 pupils when full.

As well as the families of the first year students, the opening was attended by Government chief whip Sean Kyne, TDs Hildegarde Naughton and Noel Grealish, councillors Pauline O’Reilly, Terry O’Flaherty, and Owen Hanley, as well as Social Democrats Galway West candidate Niall O’Tuathail. The 'cutting of the ribbon' to mark the school's opening was performed by Paul Rowe, CEO of Educate Together.

"I am very excited to be part of the development of the long awaited Educate Together secondary school in Galway," said Sarah Molloy, principal of Galway ETSS. "We are co-educational, equality based, democratic and student centred. Each student will be encouraged to reach their potential in a happy, safe, and inclusive environment where they are engaged in and excited about their learning. We have a brilliant team on board who really believe in this approach to learning."

Enrolments for first year 2020 have now opened. For more information see www.galwayetss.ie
