WHEN BILLIE Holiday died in 1959, The New York Times obituary stated: "Miss Holiday set a pattern during her most fruitful years that has proved more influential than that of almost any other jazz singer".

The influence has extended beyond jazz, into soul and pop, and among those she inspired were Frank Sinatra, Nina Simone, Erykah Badu, Amy Winehouse, Karen Dalton, and Cassandra Wilson.

To mark the 60th anniversary of her passing, the singer Emilie Conway will perform songs by Billie Holiday at JAZZGate: The Music of Billie Holiday in The Black Gate Cultural Centre, St Francis Street.
