Extinction Rebellion ‘tide markings’ show where water levels may rise to

Tide markers are temporary, “but the warming of our planet is not," say group

A series of ‘tide markings’ have been painted on walls on parts of Galway city centre by the Extinction Rebellion group to “illustrate where the sea levels will reach” should warnings from climate scientists not be heeded.

A spokesperson for the group said: “Galway is one of the many cities around the world which would be lost under rising sea levels within decades, and we know that more frequent storm surges will add further flooding risks. Parts of Galway city already experience flooding on an increasingly regular basis, amounting to many thousands of euros worth of damage to homes and businesses in recent years.”

The group also pointed out that the paint used to make the tide markers is temporary, “but the warming of our planet is not”.
