Club championship round-up

Group 1

Mountbellew/Moylough continue to show their credentials to Corofin’s throne with another impressive win. Defeating Caherlistrane 1-13 to 1-2 with the two Daly’s and Barry McHugh doing the damage before a late goal from Eoin Finnerty killed off any momentum Caherlistrane could have built after Shane Bohan’s 47th minute goal. This result leaves Caherlistrane bottom of the group and the only team in group 1 with zero points after Killanin and Monivea/Abbey both secured their first wins of the season. Killanin defeated An Ceathru Ruan 3-11 to 2-11 in an ultra competitive game thanks to goals from Johnny Heaney, Patrick Sweeney, and Brian Barrett. Monivea/Abbey defeated Moycullen in the early throw in in Tuam stadium on Saturday. Trailing by one heading into injury time they scored the last three points including one from Cillian McDaid to secure their first win and leave the group wide open with four of the six teams on two points.

Group 3

In group 3 St Michael’s were lucky to come out with a point against Bearna after Liam Brannigan scored a last minute goal to secure an unlikely draw. Elsewhere in the group Salthill/Knocknacarra had to play more than 35 minutes with 14 men after the dismissal of Gearoid Armstrong after two yellow cards. Following on from his intercounty championship debut in May, Robert Finnerty showed why the management team had so much faith in him scoring 0-8 with five of that total coming from play. Killererin showed great spirit to try and mount a late comeback but ultimately failed short. The other game in the group saw An Spideal face Milltown in Pearse Stadium where the O’Laoi brothers outlined their importance to their team. The four brothers combined to score 1-12 of An Spideal’s total in a 2-15 to 0-12 win. Antaine scored 0-7, Finian 1-2, Cormac 0-2, and Ciaran 0-1. Milltown will be disappointed with their outing for the second game in a row after being extremely fortunate to come away with a share of the spoils against Killererin on the opening day.
