Senior citizens should come first, says Flannery

Former Mayor of Galway Cllr Pearce Flannery made a strong statement in Galway at the weekend in support of the provision of both indoor and outdoor facilities for the aged and those in active retirement.

Speaking in Salthill Cllr Flannery said that a parent involved in sport he has always been supportive of the provision of recreation and sporting facilities for our youth.

“I will continue to support this endeavour as it has an immensely positive impact on our youth. But we must also be conscious of the needs of the elderly. I am also a son of a parent that enjoys good health well into his 90s and who is active in the community.

“I see first hand every day the importance for him and the need for the provision of excercise facilities and recreational facilities for those enjoying their golden years. Really we have an obligation to put this group first in the provision of facilities,” he says.

“As Mayor last year I was delighted to open the Outdoor Exercise Park in Salthill which is now providing great benefits to our senior citizens. The exercise park with a range of easy to use machines suitable for those with limited mobility is open to the public and the surrounding areas are sown with sage and rosemary sown to please the senses of the athletes.

“It is a beautiful area and is extremely popular with the retired people living in our community. Now that we have this in place we must provide more facilities for the aged” said Cllr Pearce Flannery.

“Our Government and our City Council must acknowledge the need to put more facilities in place for our senior citizens. Their requirements are of equal importance to any other group and must not be forgotten. When we build public parks and provide sports facilities, we must be equally conscious of the needs of the elderly and those with limited mobility and provide suitable facilities for their use.

“I believe Galway City council must also support them financially” he added.
