Charity’s proposal for Headford Road masterplan gets backing of fellow councillors

The stretch of the Headford Road, between Ballindooley and Clonboo is set for major renovations, following a proposal made this week by Independent councillor James Charity.

At Monday’s meeting of the Athenry-Oranmore Municipal Council, Cllr Charity proposed a masterplan for that area of the Headford Road, which calls for landscaping and improvement works, in order to “improve the aesthetic character of the area”. It was unanimously passed by councillors.

Speaking afterwards, Cllr Charity said it was “one of the most neglected stretches of road in the county” and noted that the area, which contains the former landfill at Carrowbrowne, had ongoing issues with illegal dumping and littering. “Unless the entire ethos and character of the road is addressed,” he said, “these incidents will continue into the longer term.”

Cllr Charity said it was “impossible to police every site along the route”, and that this was why “longer term thinking” was needed. “Landscaping, tree rows or hedging are straightforward actions that could well achieve this, while also deterring illegal activity in the longer run by improving the perception of the road,” he said.

Following the passing of the motion, the Roads Section of the Galway County Council must now prepare a plan for the area and seek funding from the Department of the Environment.
