Galway's Greene competes for Ireland

Cillin Greene of GCH travels to Scotland with the Irish team for the European Indoor Championships in Glasgow this weekend.

His selection follows his superb win and qualifying time achieved in the 400m at the National Indoor Championships in Dublin last week.

The European Championships take place over three days, from March 1 to 3, and Greene’s first race will be the 400m heats on Friday morning.

Connacht Indoor Championships

The 2019 Connacht Indoor Track and Field Championships were held in the Athlone IT Arena last weekend with Galway athletes enjoying great success.

Saturday’s action included the U12 and U13 age group events, and the highlights saw Darragh Fahy of Loughrea AC winning triple gold in the U13 60m sprint and 60m hurdles, as well as the long jump, and Danielle Moynihan of Tuam taking double gold at U13 level individually.

At juvenile level on Saturday, Elisa Jaime Stapleton of GCH and JJ Oifoh of Tuam AC won their respective U12 60m events, while Jessica Kay (GCH ) won the 60m hurdles. Lauren Kilduff of Craughwell AC was the winner of the long jump, with Ben Moran of GCH claiming gold in the boys' event. Ruby Casey of East Galway claimed the shot putt taking the title, while Craughwell athletes made it a double victory for the club, with Conor Penny and Emma Donovan taking gold in the high jump events.

Danielle Moynihan of Tuam AC won the U13 in a fast time of 8.81 seconds, with Darragh Fahy of Loughrea claiming the boys' event, just ahead of Ronan Duggan and Richard McGrath of GCH. Craughwell's Ella Farrelly, and Loughrea's Darragh Fahy won gold in the hurdles, with Craughwell's Darragh Kelly in second place.

Fahy also won the long jump, while Amy Ni Chlochartaigh of Club Luthcleas Connemara produced a superb 4.96 metres to claim the girls' crown.

Cian Rafferty of Tuam AC took shot putt gold, just pipping Caltra and District’s Jack O'Shaughnessy by three centimetres. And in the high jump, Darragh Kelly grabbed his third gold, while Danielle Moynihan claimed her second, winning the long jump.

In the distance events, Myah Gallagher of Tuam was most impressive, clocking 1.46 for victory in the 600m, while the relays saw gold with Galway City Harriers claiming the U12 girls and U13 boys 4x200m relays, Tuam AC the U12 boys and U13 girls.

In Sunday’s U14 events, Aoibhe Donnellan of Craughwell AC won gold in the 60m, clubmate Chloe Hallinan won the 60m hurdles, and Evan Moran won the boys' hurdles for GCH. Grace Bermingham of South Galway AC won high jump gold, Craughwell's Niamh Duffy won the shot putt, and Oisin Phelan of Tuam claimed the long jump.

At U15 level, sprinter Mathieu Madden of GCH took gold in the 60m in 8.12, Fauve Aylmer of Craughwell AC won the 800m, while twins Stephen Mannion and David Mannion of South Galway AC could only be separated by one hundredth of a second, with Stephen pipping David to victory in a time of 2.13.06 to 2.13.07. Ava McKeon of GCH won the U15 hurdles title by a clear margin, with David Mannion claiming gold for South Galway in a fast 8.43. In the U15 relays, GCH won girls' gold with South Galway AC winning the boys' race, while on the field, Jade Moorehead and Evan Hallinan made it a Craughwell double in the high jump, with Stephen Mannion taking the long jump for his second gold.

Liam Shaw’s U15 Shot Putt victory for Athenry was one of the highlights of the day. He set a championship best, throwing 16.10 metres.

At U16 level Conor Hoade won both long jump and 60m hurdles, Ross McGuinness of Craughwell AC won the 1500m, and Michael Leahy of South Galway took the 800m gold. GCH won the U16 girls' relay, and in the jumps, Isabelle Moynihan of Tuam AC took the high jump, Matt Lawlor of South Galway AC won the shot putt, while Lucas Schukat of Craughwell won the pole vault and Roisin Geaney of South Galway AC won the race walk.

In U17 events, Shaun Gilligan of GCH sprinted to 60m gold, and GCH also won gold. Sean Cotter of Craughwell AC claimed the U17 1500m, Eimear Rowe of Galway City Harriers won the 200m after taking a silver in the 800m, and in the field, Ellie Cronin of Craughwell AC and Ryan O'Connor of Tuam AC won both high jump titles.

Robert McDonnell of GCH won double gold in the U18 200m and 400m events, with GCH winning both relay titles

Seren O'Toole won the hurdles, ahead of clubmate Chloe Casey and Aoibhe Deeley of Athenry AC, and she later won her second gold in the 200m event. In the field, Leanagh Gilligan of Craughwell AC won the tiple jump title.

Aubrey O'Brien of Craughwell AC won both U19 60m and 200m, and also the long jump, while clubmate Sean Noonan took the honours in the 400m race. GCH won the girls' relay gold.

At senior level Regina Casey took Connacht gold in the women's 3000m with a fast time of 10.05, behind guest Abbie Taylor of DSD, and Tim Jones took third spot in the men’s race for GCH.

Lydia Doyle claimed gold in the 60m for GCH, clubmate Laura Nally took 200m gold, while Aoife Sheehy won the 400m. Jim Phelan took double Masters gold for GCH at 200 and 400m, and Majella Loftus won 200m Masters women's gold.

Aisling Joyce of GCH just held off Sinead Gaffney of Craughwell in the 800m, with Kathryn Casserly also GCH third, and Jack Maher and Gavin Cooney placed second and third in the 800m.

Seamus Leddy of GCH returned to action with victory in the 1500m Walk, and both relays went to Craughwell AC teams

Mary Barrett of Loughrea AC took gold in both the 60m hurdles, high jump, and shot putt at Masters, while Brendan Lynch of Loughrea claimed gold in the senior hurdles, and Claudia Matsumoto won senior shot gold.

In the field, Sean Breathnach of GCH won the Shot Putt from younger brother Michael Breathnach with Dick O'Hanlon winning masters' gold. In the triple jump, senior gold went to Lorraine Delaney of Craughwell AC and Brendan Lynch of Loughrea, while Justin Lane of Tuam AC won the high jump and pole vault to cap a superb event for Galway clubs
