Galway athletes battle it out for honours

Three Galway athletes were in top form at the 2019 National Juvenile Combined Events Indoor Championships in Athlone IT on Saturday, bringing home three medals.

Conor Hoade and Daragh Jennings, both of GCH, produced a great battle over five events at U16 level, with Hoade ultimately taking the gold, with 3,144 points. Hoade impressed by winning four of five events – hurdles, high jump, long jump, and 800m, while Jennings took the silver medal with a fine performance, winning the shot putt.

At U15 level, Liam Shaw of Athenry AC claimed Galway’s third medal of the day, winning bronze with a total of 2,538 points across the five-event competition

International Cross Country

Galway City Harriers Thomas McStay competed on the Irish U20 team at the Northern Ireland hosted IAAF International Cross-Country event held in Dundonald, Belfast, on Saturday, and ran well, placing 28th overall. Aaron Brennan and Barry Murphy of GCH also competed in the top-class race.

In the women's section, Galway athlete Laura Shaughnessy produced a strong run to finish 15th overall in a star-studded international women’s race, which was won by Meskerem Mamo of Ethiopia.

Tuam AC 8k

Irish international Sean Hehir of Rathfarnham WSAF took the honours at the Tuam AC 8k road race on Sunday, winning by a clear margin in a fast time of 24.59.

Eamon McAndrew of North Sligo placed second and third home was Gary Higgins.

The first woman was Regina Casey of Galway City Harriers in an impressive 29.03, with the next two spots taken by Deirdre Galvin of Westport AC and Colette Tuohy of Mayo AC in second and third respectively.

Fixtures

National Indoor competitions: The indoor season hots up this weekend, with two major national competitions down for decision. On Saturday the second and final round of the National Indoor League takes place in Athlone IT, with Craughwell women the sole Galway representatives. On Sunday, the Irish Life Health Junior and U23 Indoors takes place also in Athlone IT, and many of the county’s top up-and-coming juniors are likely to feature, including Nicole Walsh and Lydia Doyle.

Coldwood 4 Mile race

The annual Coldwood 4 Mile road race takes place next Sunday at 11am. Coldwood National School will be holding this annual race as a fundraiser aid of development of the school. Run in conjunction with Craughwell AC, the race will be chip timed and is AAI approved.
