People of the Tribes: Meet Eva

In association with McGettigans

Hello, my name is Eva Whyte. I am 16 years old and have been living in Galway my entire life.

I live in Clarinbridge, home of the oyster. Clarinbridge is a small village, approximately a 10 minute drive outside Oranmore. I attended Scoil Mhuire, Clarinbridge primary school and am currently a TY student in Calasanctius College, Oranmore.

I am thoroughly enjoying my TY experience and am filled with gratitude to be offered the opportunity. We have had many fascinating experiences already, such as a trip to Limerick Prison. We also get the chance to do work experience. At the present time, I am doing my work experience in the Galway Advertiser, and am savouring every moment.

I feel that TY will be of huge benefit to me in the long run. We learn some of the most important life skills, which are necessary in all working environments and every walk of life. I truly believe that this year will help me to become the best person I can be and prepare me for my future. One of the many benefits of TY is having a lot more free time. I love music, and have been playing the violin since I was four years old. When I am playing my violin, I am completely absorbed by it, it is my escape from everyday life and always leaves me feeling mellow. I love being in the outdoors, I play soccer, and go for walks in the woods or near the coast. Whenever I get the chance, I practice yoga.

I have always loved school. I have an interest in most subjects, but my favourites would have to be; English, Irish, French, art, and music. Throughout this year I am eager to improve on these. I know that the more I read for pleasure, the better at English I will become. I am trying to read as much as I can. I adore learning new languages and am keen to do a French exchange this year. I have been to the Gaeltacht twice and was amazed by how much my Irish had improved by being immersed in the language. I love art, all types of craft and design and have a huge passion for fashion. One of my favourite ways to treat myself is to go shopping.

I have yet to decide what career path I will take, but for the moment, I am just going to focus on the subjects I enjoy. The only thing I know for sure is that I want to go to college in Galway. I am curious about the world, and I do plan to do a lot of travelling, but I could not imagine going to college anywhere else. I love Galway. With a community of diverse, genuine and loving people, what's not to love? No matter where you go in Galway, there is a distinctively warm and welcoming atmosphere.
