This Christmas, to save you from tears, give your eyes some TLC at Oranmore Optometrists.
Dry eye is a very common condition that occurs when the quantity and quality of the tears fails to keep the surface of the eye adequately lubricated.
Symptoms of dry eyes
Dry eye causes an irritating sensation or the feeling that something is in the eye. Other symptoms include stinging or burning, episodes of excess tearing that follow periods of dryness, discharge, pain, and redness in the eye. People with dry eye may also feel as if their eyelids are heavy and may experience blurred vision.
Factors that can contribute to dry eye include the following:
• People aged 50 years or older.
• Inflammatory conditions.
• Autoimmune disorders.
• Women are more likely to develop dry eye.
• Hormonal changes.
• Windy, smoky, or dry environments increase tear evaporation.
• Seasonal allergies can contribute to dry eye.
• Prolonged periods of screen time encourage insufficient blinking.
• Laser eye surgery may cause temporary dry eye symptoms.
An Ophthalmologist or an Optometrist who has examined your eyes will decide on the best course of action for your dry eye. Only management of the dry eye will alleviate the symptoms.
At Oranmore Optometrists, we have a new revolutionary treatment, called BLEPHEX. This device improves the overall health of the eyelids and thus the eye surface. The BLEPHEX is a soft, medical grade sponge that moves across the eyelids whilst it rotates to effectively remove debris and bacteria that have caused blockages of the glands around the eyelids. These glands produce oils; that is essential to keep the surface of the eye well lubricated with quality tears.
Similar to a dental hygienist removing plaque, BLEPHEX gently unblocks the oil glands, effectively removing the debris for clean, clear and comfortable eyes.
After this treatment patients can then begin to produce more of their own tears and finally enjoy a life free from chronic and irritating symptoms associated with dry eye and blepharitis.
In between treatments, we will recommend the best way to care for your eyelids and keep them clear. This may include using drops, cleansing wipes, heat therapy or omega oils. A repeat BLEPHEX treatment is may be needed once or twice a year.
