Centuries of fine hospitality continue at the impressive Cloonacauneen Castle

Fine food and good wines have been served for well over four hundred years at Cloonacauneen Castle and this tradition still continues in the tower house that rises majestically over the landscape around it on the Tuam Road.

Cloonacauneen castle is one of Galway’s best known Tower Houses rising up to over fifty feet in ivy splendor above the lonely peaty plains of the Curraghline, its floor plan of thirty-one feet sets it regally among its limestone peers.

Its stony spiral staircase leads up from the former storage room at ground level to the ancient kitchen area, above again the master bedroom, and higher up to the main banqueting hall, where guests across the centuries were wined and dined. These main rooms occupied a third of the building, with the rest assigned to servants and defence personnel.

Now you can sample the history of a working castle. Enjoy splendid food and wine within the historic walls that have resonated with superb hospitality since the 1500s.

Owned and run by the Kearney family for almost two decades, it is now under new management and retains the high standards that have seen it as one of Galway’s most atmospheric and historic dining locations.

The bar is now open daily from 6pm; and on Sundays, lunch is served from 12.30 to 5pm. They are currently taking bookings for Christmas lunch, weddings, parties, christenings and birthday or reunion parties. They also supply accommodation for wedding parties
