Galway roads get €1.1 million for storm damage repairs

A total of €1.1 million has been allocated to the repair of roads throughout County Galway, which were damaged by a series of storms this year. The funding will come through a special maintenance grant.

The funding was announced yesterday by the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Shane Ross, and has been welcomed by the Independent Galway West TD Noel Grealish. Dep Grealish said the extent of the damage from the various storms meant the “normal allocation” the Galway County Council receives for roads upkeep “just wouldn’t cover the repairs needed”.

Storm Eleanor, Storm Emma, Storm Ali, and Storm Callum “have all left a trail of damage in one way or another” and the roads in County Galway were “badly affected in many instances”, said Dep Grealish. “If the repairs were to be done under the normal annual allocations,” he said, “many roads would be left damaged and further disintegrating for years to come. I hope the county council can now tackle the repairs and maintenance needed as soon as possible.”
