Irish acts at 2018 Galway Jazz Festival

From hip hop to existential philosophy - this festival has it all

IRISH JAZZ musicians, channelling the sounds of Cuba and American hip hop, the ideas of Albert Camus, and others possessing voices that can croon with the best, are all coming to the 2018 Galway Jazz Festival.

Tommy Halferty, the world renowned guitarist and composer, will perform a new suite, which is performed by nine players, and is inspired by the works of French-Algerian writer and philosopher Albert Camus. He will play three gigs at the festival.

The first Irish musician to introduce Cuban jazz to Ireland, Conor Guilfoyle, brings his new octet to Biteclub. Jaco Pastorious inspired bassist, Athenry's Barry Donoghue, will be performing with his band Plaza Real. Shy Mascot, headed by Galway's Eanna Ryder, bring their jazz-inflected funk and hip-hop to the festival. The band also features rapper Jamal.

Jim Doherty (piano ) and Dave Fleming (bass ), two of the elder statesmen of the Irish jazz scene of the seventies and eighties, are also playing the festival, as are singers Cormac Kenevy and Flo McSweeney, and the Koko Ensemble, Myles Drennan, and Nick Roth.

The Galway Jazz Festival runs from October 4 to 7. For more information see www.galwayjazz.ie
