More brides and grooms are now insuring their wedding days

Just 10 per cent of Irish couples insure their wedding days.

Ciaran Mulligan, managing director of Blue Insurance, parent company of weddinginsurance.ie, has highlighted the importance of taking out insurance for your wedding day following the collapse of Wedding World, Dublin, last week, which reportedly left up to 200 brides without bridesmaids dresses for their big day.

“The wedding industry in Ireland is worth more than €100 million per year and rising," he said. "With couples spending on average €25,000 on their big day it is very concerning that only 10 per cent of couples insure their special day. With bridal attire costing thousands and the financial exposure to couples if a bridal shop, venue or other wedding supplier went into liquidation, it just doesn’t make financial sense to not protect their wedding day.

“We have seen a significant number of bridal/groom shops close over the past number of years, leaving brides without a dress, and adding significant additional costs rectifying the problem. Wedding insurance covers supplier failure, which includes bridal/groom shop closures and also covers hotel liquidation so wedding couples won’t end up out of pocket or stranded if a venue closes down on their big day.”

Wedding insurance starts from €33.99. Weddinginsurance.ie is Ireland’s largest provider of wedding insurance, and offers four cover levels to suit couples needs. They provide cover against cancellation and rearrangement, against theft or loss of wedding gifts and rings, failure of suppliers including flowers, transport, cake, photography and video, plus legal expenses and personal liability. Optional Marquee cover is also available.
