Contract for Garda Station to be signed

The contract for the new €9m Garda Station for Athlone should be signed in the coming weeks.

Minister for the Office of Public Works, Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran revealed earlier this week that the contract was scheduled to be signed at a public event attended by local councillors and members of the force this Friday, February 23. However, due to other commitments that date has now been pushed back.

The project, which has been talked about for the last decade and received initial planning permission more than eight years ago, will combine the existing station with the former social welfare office adjacent to it. It is estimated that the works will take two years to complete and will be done on a phased basis so that the station can stay open.

Minister Moran paid tribute to the Gardai in Athlone for working under what he described as “unsuitable conditions” for many years. He added that it is great news for the west side of Athlone that the station is staying in its current location.
