Athlone Musical Society presents a timeless classic

Athlone Musical Society's 2018 production of Jesus Christ Superstar will take to the Dean Crowe Theatre stage on March 3.

Rehearsals are currently in full swing with director Alfie Kilduff, choreographer Lea Carroll and musical director Ger Madden putting the cast of more than 50 through their paces.

Jesus Christ Superstar tells the story of the last seven days of Jesus leading up to his crucifixion, following his entry to Jerusalem, his growing popularity and eventual condemnation. The show is a rock opera by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, with the story focusing on the conflicts between Jesus and his disciples, the people of Israel and the ruling Roman Empire.

The show was first staged on Broadway in 1971 and was controversial for its time as it asked audiences to take a different view of the biblical story, particularly Judas' motives. The show was previously performed by Athlone Musical Society in 1984 and 2003, and this year the society are delighted to welcome back members from these productions. Together with some familiar society faces and some new members, the society is preparing for an epic production, with director Alfie Kilduff taking a new approach to this popular musical.

“Our audience has never seen a Jesus Christ production in this way. It’s brand new and exciting. This year is the 45th anniversary of the 1973 screen adaption, it’s a great time to be directing this iconic show,” Kilduff said.

Jesus Christ Superstar gives audiences huge musical hits such as “I don’t know how to Love Him”, “Gethsemane” and, the shows signature show-stopper, “Superstar”.

This is a special year for two members of Athlone Musical Society, with director Alfie Kilduff and Joan Larkin celebrating their 35th consecutive show with Athlone Musical Society.

Jesus Christ Superstar will run from March 3 to 10 in the Dean Crowe theatre. Tickets are available at www.deancrowetheatre.com Alternatively, call (090 ) 6492129.
