Kelly’s men looking to follow up on Derry win

Buoyed up by a brilliant away win in Derry, Westmeath will be hoping to secure another Allianz Football League Division 3 victory against Armagh at TEG Cusack Park on Sunday, with a 2.30pm throw-in.

Colin Kelly’s improving team registered an excellent 2-17 to 2-14 victory at Celtic Park, with captain John Heslin leading by example. Callum McCormack and Heslin bagged early goals for the midlanders, while Eoin Carberry made an important lave save from an Enda Lynn penalty.

“It is good, but personally I would have that expectation from the lads and they have that expectations of themselves,” manager Kelly said about Westmeath’s performance in an interview with Midlands Sport 103.

“What is pleasing is the manner they went about it, they kicked 2-17, they didn’t come here win a 0-10 to 0-9 bore or 1-6 to 0-7. Both teams went at it and both teams played decent football at times. It probably could have been better, but to come into this environment to kick 2-17 bodes well for what we are trying to do.”

Kelly insists that Westmeath’s only focus is on Armagh this weekend.

“Promotion or relegation won’t be mentioned within the group,” the former Louth boss stated. “We will worry about Armagh next week, there is another six games to be played. Every one of them is a contest we will try to win, we will try to win next Sunday. We are not setting agendas about where we want to be at a certain time, we want to enjoy what we are doing.” Kelly is delighted by the way his panel are responding.

“It is about accumulating a tally that other teams have to chase down,” Kelly commented. “We speak about getting 17 or 18 scores a game, if we can get that other teams have to come to get you. We have the capabilities all day long within the group of scoring 17 or 18 times. If we get that it sets a fair standard for the other teams to chase down. It proved a little bit too much for Derry.”
