Galway now await Roscommon after Leitrim dispatched

Roscommon set up a July 9 Connacht SFC final against Galway after defeating Leitrim at Dr Hyde Park last Sunday.

Kevin McStay's team, assisted by two Conor Devaney goals in the opening period, proved far too strong for Leitrim, emerging 2-23 to 1-9 victors.

In 2016, Roscommon suffered a provincial decider replay loss against Galway, and McStay believes his team can make a serious impact in Salthill next month.

“We needed to get the ticket to get to the final," McStay said, following Roscommon's emphatic success over Leitrim. "Unfortunately, it bears no resemblance to what we’re going to face.

“We haven’t done anything to break into that bubble. But that’s not to say that we wouldn’t do something to break into the bubble in the next few weeks. We’re going to go to Galway to make amends for some of the stuff that we did previously up there which wasn’t acceptable.”

Diarmuid Murtagh contributed seven points including six from play, while Enda Smith, Brian Stack, and Fintan Cregg were also effective for Roscommon.

Darragh Rooney netted an early goal for Leitrim, but Roscommon were always in control with Devaney prominent.

Leitrim manager Brendan Guckian highlighted Roscommon's greater physical power as being crucial.

“There were times we just weren’t able to compete when Roscommon went at us," Guckian commented.

"Physically, they look in great shape, and the goals definitely killed us in the first half. It’s very hard to bounce back after a start like that.

“These lads work as hard as anyone else, but just didn’t show that. There’s no doubt they make the same sacrifices, same effort, so hopefully they can pick themselves up for the next day.”
