Tidy Towns to create three jobs as 2009 campaign kicks off

The creation of three new jobs and use of a brand new van with a logo are just two of the exciting projects under way by Athlone Tidy Towns Committee, which held its AGM on Tuesday this week.

Returned chairman of the committee, Cllr John Butler, said the group was looking for a special effort from everyone in the local community this year to improve the overall impression of Athlone.

“We have funding of €90,000 this year and we intend to employ three people. Their job will be to ensure that all approach roads and areas in need of enhancement are looked after. We are going to put extra effort into improving the overall impression of the town this year,” said Cllr Butler.

“We have just finished the van with the logo, and this will be evident around the town in the coming weeks. People won’t be able to miss it.”

The main objective this year, according to the chairman, is to ensure the town’s approach roads and blackspots are maintained to a high standard.

“Our main objective is to tackle all the approach roads and litter blackspots, and then to ensure that grass and hedge cutting is carried out. We will be giving out vests and bags under the ‘Adopt a Street’ programme. We are looking for a special effort, and are asking everyone involved to bring someone else along to help,” he added.

The newly elected Tidy Towns committee members are chairperson Cllr Butler, secretary Breen Cunningham, vice secretary Paul Dowling, treasurer Gerry Johnston, assistant treasurer Geraldine Regan, and PRO Mike Connor.
