‘Get Breathless’ with the COPD Cycle Challenge

The COPD Cycle Challenge, a two-day cycle from Galway to Dublin, takes place on June 23 and 24 over two stages of approximately 100km each. Led by world-renowned cycling champion, Seán Kelly and supported by a professional crew of guides and support vehicles, the event involves an overnight stay in the Hodson Bay Hotel.

The challenge has two main aims: to raise awareness of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD ) and to help raise much-needed funds for COPD Support Ireland’s range of services, including its expanding network of local support groups countrywide and exercise rehabilitation classes for people with COPD.

Perhaps better known as bronchitis or emphysema, COPD is estimated to affect up to 380,000 people in Ireland, but with many others remaining undiagnosed and untreated.

Symptoms of COPD include persistent cough with phlegm, chest infections, and breathlessness. Early diagnosis is important in order to ensure a better quality of life and so that sufferers maintain their health for longer.

Whether an occasional or a seasoned cyclist, this cycle is suitable for cyclists of all levels. Participants can take part on one or both days. The challenge also offers the opportunity to explore Ireland’s fantastic countryside, to get a bit of exercise, and to secure some cycling tips from the master that is Seán Kelly.
