O’Rourke calls for the Cathaoirleach Awards to be held in Athlone

Local councillor Aengus O’Rourke (FF ) has called for the Cathaoirleach Awards to be held in Athlone.

The Cathaoirleach Awards are designed to recognise and support people right throughout the country who volunteer their time for community activities and initiatives. The awards have always been held in Mullingar, something Cllr O’Rourke says must change.

“It does not make sense to hold them year after year in Mullingar without moving them around the county,” Cllr O’Rourke said.

“I propose that every other year the awards take place in Athlone, or indeed in any other part of the county that should wish to hold them. I just think moving it around and giving everywhere a piece of the action is the correct way of doing this.

“It is the most prestigious council-run event of the year, our keynote event, and it does not make sense that any part of the county has a monopoly over it.”

Cllr O’Rourke was advised to take the issue to the Corporate Policy Group later this month.
