Major investment for Custume Barracks announced

Funding to the value of €2 million has been earmarked for the enhancement of Custume Barracks.

The new funding will go towards a new hangar for the Athlone-based Air Corps emergency helicopter used for the Emergency Aeromedical Support (EAS ). It is expected that the project is likely to go to design stage by the end of the year.

Longford-Westmeath Independent Deputy, Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran, and Communications Minister Denis Naughten have been in discussions with Minister for Defence, Paul Kehoe, regarding the investment.

“This new investment will secure the long-term future of the emergency helicopter service for Custume Barracks and for Athlone," Deputy Moran said. “We all know the vital work that these men and women do on a daily basis. This is a further example of the current Government’s continued support for Custume Barracks. This news also confirms the strategic importance of the barracks in Athlone.

The news follows a previous announcement by Deputy Moran which saw €2m going towards the refurbishment of the dining hall complex.

“Custume Barracks remains a top priority for me and I look forward to continued investment by this Government in its infrastructure,” said Deputy Moran. “I am glad this announcement restates the Government's total commitment to continuing the process of major investment in equipment and infrastructure for the Defence Forces.

“I also want to sincerely thank Minister Naughten for his support and his continued commitment to Custume Barracks. The ongoing support for the emergency services by the Defence Forces is also a tremendous help to people living in rural Ireland.”
