Athlone Big Clean Up on Good Friday

The annual Athlone 'Big Clean Up', taking place on April 14 from 11am to 2pm, was launched on Wednesday this week by Mayor of Athlone, John Dolan, and Gerry Johnson of Athlone Tidy Towns.

The campaign is being supported by Athlone Chamber of Commerce, the Living Environment Group of Destination Athlone, and Westmeath County Council.

At the launch, Mayor Dolan congratulated all concerned. He said the initiative "will enable us to showcase the tremendous community spirit in Athlone" and urged everyone young and old to participate.

Gerry Johnson welcomed the support and commitment of the business community to this annual Tidy Towns event and thanked the many volunteers who work all year round to present Athlone at its best. He advised there will be eight designated locations where volunteers are asked to assemble and receive gloves, bags, pickers, and bibs as needed.

John McGrath, president of the Chamber of Commerce, said: “The chamber are very pleased to add their support again this year. Every business knows the importance of an attractive well-maintained environment to attracting visitors and new businesses to the town.”

Mr McGrath also welcomed the fact that so many businesses have agreed to provide refreshments on the day, after the clean-up.

Further details of the Big Clean Up will be announced in the coming days.
