Two days in hospital for Minister after cycling accident

Local Minister Denis Naughten is recovering from back injuries after being struck by a car while out cycling on Monday this week (January 2 ).

He was expected to be discharged from hospital yesterday (Wednesday ), after spending two days in hospital in both Portiuncula, Ballinasloe and Galway University Hospital.

The Communications Minister was knocked off his bicycle on Monday afternoon while out cycling with his wife Mary on the Castlecotte Road just outside Roscommon town.

He suffered back injuries and was taken by ambulance to Portiuncula Hospital, before being admitted at 3am on Tuesday morning.

He was one of 18 people waiting on trolleys in A&E at Portiuncula on Tuesday, according to INMO figures.

Minister Naughten was transferred to Galway University Hospital for tests on Tuesday evening, but was described as much improved yesterday.
