Veterans return to Athlone for annual convention

Fresh from receiving the long-awaited Jadotville citation, the Organisation of National Ex-Service Personnel (ONE ) will hold its annual convention and AGM in the Radisson Blu Hotel, Athlone, from September 23 to 25. ONE held its first ever annual convention in Athlone in 1952.

The weekend commences with a welcome reception on Friday evening. Throughout the three days there will be discussion on motions, workshops, and the adoption of a new five-year strategic plan for the charity.

On Sunday, ONE will parade from Custume Barracks to St Peter’s and Paul’s Church at 11.30am behind the Athlone Town Pipe Band. A special remembrance Mass will be held at noon in the church.

ONE, which has a home for homeless former members of the Defence Forces in Athlone, provides accommodation and other assistance to elderly, disabled, and homeless former members of the Defence Forces.

During the weekend the board of directors will consult with more than 100 member delegates from 40 branches from around the country on how the charity will progress over the coming years.
