Spirit Radio launches in Athlone

Ireland’s first and only Christian radio station, Spirit Radio, has arrived on the Athlone airwaves. People of Athlone can now listen to its mix of music, news, and talk programming on 90.6FM.

The station, which was founded five years ago, draws 540,000 listeners a week and is proving to be a surprising competitor to some of the larger national radio stations.

Largely music-driven, the Spirit programming is upbeat, positive, and contemporary. The station aims to appeal to people from a broad range of backgrounds who are looking to reflect on some of the deeper questions of life.

The Breakfast Show with Mark and Rebecca is full of banter and is particularly popular with parents on the school run. The Morning Chat Show with Wendy Grace is a lively mix of lifestyle, relationships, current affairs, and faith. The Late Night Chat is popular with students. Spirit Radio provides a full service of national and international news.

While Spirit Radio does carry some advertising, the station is Ireland’s first listener-supported radio station. Two thirds of the income is generated through listener donations.

CEO Rob Clarke said: “We are delighted that the people of Athlone can now listen to us on 90.6FM. The station is continuing to grow its listenership and we are really excited about the future. We believe that we bring something unique to the airwaves. Whether you are religious or not you might just find comfort in the type of programming that Spirit Radio offers.”
