Beat those recession blues

Let’s face it, it’s all a bit depressing. Now I’m all for optimism and looking on the bright side, but there comes a point when you just can’t take any more bad news.

It feels like every second someone out there loses their job. And I even think that Ingrid Miley and George Lee are getting a bit sick of this recession talk. It’s high time we all got over it.

So after some careful consideration we’ve come up with some top tips to get over the recession blues.

1 - Quit your job

Look, the simple fact is you’re probably going to lose your job sooner or later, right? And I bet you walk into work every morning begrudgingly muttering ‘at least I have a job’ wondering if today will be the day you get let go. So why not erase that fear and stress by quitting your job? You get about €200 a week, not to mention some serious lie-ins. It’s a win-win situation.

2 - Economical shopping

There’s a huge supermarket war going on at the moment, which is great news for those strapped for cash. I’m all for shopping local and supporting Irish, but sometimes you have to be frugal, and Aldi and Lidl are godsends!

No more so than this week. Guys, with Valentine’s Day around the corner don’t fret. Lidl are selling bunches of roses for €5.99. And trust me when I say we won’t be able to tell the difference!

3 - Bring back your video recorder

Can’t afford Sky Plus any more? Don’t worry. Dig up your old video recorder and watch all those tapes of Friends and Buffy The Vampire Slayer you recorded 10 years ago. It’s just like watching E4!

4 - House swap

Have some friends who are a bit better off than you, who live in a nicer part of the country? Persuade them to do a house swap with you this summer. It’s almost like going on a real holiday. And if you happen to find some money under their mattress I’m sure they won’t mind if you ‘borrow’ it.

5 - Dump your other half

Being in a relationship can be an expensive business. What with birthday presents, weekends away, not to mention the phone bill. Try out the single life for a bit. You’ll be surprised how much you can save!

It doesn’t look like this recession lark is going to go away any time soon, so your best bet is to get on with it. We’re all in the same boat at the end of the day. Just think, if we hold on in there for another 10 years we’re sure to have another economic boom. Right?
