Tributes paid to “heart and soul” of local cycling scene

Tributes have been paid to Kiltoom man Pat Coyle who passed away suddenly while taking part in a cycling event in Belgium last Saturday, April 2.

Pat, who was a founding member of the Shannonside Cycling Club, became ill and collapsed while cycling in the Tour of Flanders Sportive event with his son Alan. It was his 14th time taking part in the event.

The popular Kiltoom man, who was in his 50s, was an integral part of the Athlone and South Roscommon local cycling scene, and had coached at both local and national level.

Tributes on the Shannonside Cycling Club Facebook page described him as “a true gentleman” and “a dedicated and uplifting person”, who was “the heart and soul of cycling in Athlone”. Many of those commenting remarked on how welcoming and helpful he always was to those within the club and in the cycling world.

Pat is sadly missed by his wife Angela and sons Eamonn, Alan, and Darren.
