Week Seven of The Irish Times and Pfizer Healthy Town Focuses on Heart Health

Week seven of The Irish Times and Pfizer Healthy Town will focus on the importance of looking after your heart.

Dr Angie Brown, medical director at the Irish Heart Foundation and consultant cardiologist, and Janis Morrissey, dietitian at the Irish Heart Foundation, will give a free public talk on the importance of heart health on Thursday, October 22, at the Sheraton Hotel at 7pm.

They will be joined on the evening by Maura Canning who will share her personal experience of living with high blood pressure. Speaking about her involvement in the programme, Dr Angie Brown said: “High blood pressure along with other heart conditions can increase the risk of stroke and heart attack. It’s important to look after your heart health and be aware of the lifestyle factors that can impact negatively on your heart.

“The Irish Times and Pfizer Healthy Town programme gives people a chance to learn more about their health and wellbeing and to check their heart health through free public talks and free health checks.” There is often no single cause of high blood pressure. Being overweight, drinking too much alcohol, eating too much salt, and not eating enough fresh fruit and vegetables may lead to an increase in blood pressure.”

Events and activities happening during The Irish Times and Pfizer Healthy Town programme include: A free public talk each week on a range of topics; free heart health checks on October 24 at the Sheraton Hotel; running club training in the Regional Sports Centre every Monday at 7pm; hell and back training for teenagers every Monday in the Regional Sports Centre from 5pm to 5.45pm; a free spinning class each Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 7.30am to 8.30am; and a free parkrun in Athlone Institute of Technology every Saturday at 9.30am.
